BNS and non-mechanical beam steering
March 20, 2017
Howell International is pleased to be assisting Boulder Nonlinear Systems (BNS). BNS is a leader in research and development of custom light control solutions, with more than 25 years of experience in delivering practical devices and systems to government, academic and commercial partners. This includes non-mechanical beam steering and modulation devices based on next-generation liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) spatial light modulators and liquid crystal polarization gratings. With current support from the DoD, NASA, NSF and NIH, as well as contracts from industry leaders and prime defense contractors, they are a recognized leader in this area.
Currently the company is exploring commercial opportunities for the technologies that it has developed over the years. One current area of activity involves BNS’s patented technology that utilizes liquid crystal polarization gratings (LCPGs) to steer light without mechanical assistance. With no moving parts, the reliability and maintenance issues associated with mechanical scanners such as their susceptibility to shock/vibration, wear and tear and dirt/grit fouling is eliminated. This technology is particularly suited to LIDAR solutions which are regularly used in self driving cars and unmanned aerial drones.
